Early Childhood Special Education Ages 3-5

Early Intervention CAN Make a Difference

The early years are extremely important to a child's development.  NO two children develop at the same rate.  While some children develop "ahead" of others their age, some children may seem a "little behind."  Early Childhood Special Education services are available to all eligible children, ages 3-5, with special needs.  Eligible disabilities include:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Blind or Low Vision
  • Cognitive Disability
  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Disability
  • Language/Speech Impairment
  • Multiple Disabilities
  • Other Health Impairment
  • Orthopedic Impairment
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Benefit

There are general ages at which children should be able to do certain things.  The following may help you determine if your child could benefit from referral for early intervention services.

How Do I know if My Child May Benefit from Early Intervention Services?

A multidisciplinary team will assess your child in a developmental preschool setting.  This team consists of the parent and the various professionals with knowledge in the area of suspected disability and may include a social worker, early childhood special education teacher, school psychologist, speech/language pathologist, occupational therapist, and physical therapist. The team works together using a variety of assessment instruments to determine your child's strengths and needs in the developmental areas of gross motor, fine motor, self-help, social, cognitive, and language.

*If your child has a speech delay only, the evaluation will likely be conducted by a speech/language pathologist in a single session.

A Case Conference Committee will be held to review the assessment information and determine eligibility.  If eligible, an Individual Education Program (IEP) will be developed, which outlines appropriate educational services based on your child's strengths and needs.

How Will Services Be Provided?

Services will be provided by the South Bend Community School Corporation's Special Needs and Abilities Preschool (SNAP) Program.  The staff will work to stimulate your child's development in a preschool environment.  Through carefully planned instruction, your child will participate in a variety of learning experiences designed to meet the goals and objectives outlines in the IEP.  Children may receive services at McKinley Early Childhood Center or in collaboration with the South Bend School's Pre-K Program.
